Carolie Parker
Carolie Parker is a visual artist and poet with a background in foreign languages and world literature. Her sculptural installations and prints draw on organic forms, contemporary landscape and the map, a hybrid medium that straddles visual and written communication. In 2011, she was a MacDowell Fellow (poetry) and a Visiting Artist at the American Academy in Rome. She has exhibited at The Armory Center for the Arts, Haus and Carl Berg Gallery. Her poetry has come out in NOW culture, River Styx Magazine and Upstairs at Duroc, Paris. She currently teaches humanities and art history in the Los Angeles Community Colleges. Her poems are smart and fun and worldly; her strong background in the visual arts is evident in much of her poetry. I’ve only heard her read once, but it’s not an experience you forget. The sunlight and art and ruins of Rome come out in her work; she writes of people’s struggles but never with a heavy hand and always with gentleness and humor. As far as I know she doesn’t have a huge body of poetry yet, but let us hope that we’ll be hearing a lot more from her in the years to come.
